Recyclable Pai skincare tubes

7 sustainable swaps that make a big difference

Whether you’ve been inspired by Plastic Free July, Earth Day or even Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet, there’s never been a better time to start living more sustainably. Gone are the days when green living meant a need to compromise; it’s now easier than ever to be eco-friendly with plastic-free innovations and ethical brands creating products with a conscience.

At Pai we’ve always been champions of living sustainably (hey, we even won Best Organic Brand in Marie Claire’s Sustainability Awards!). In 2020 we dropped our use of plastic in our warehouse to less than 10%, revamping our range to incorporate recycled plastic into 80% of our tubes. The rest are bioplastic, made with sustainably sourced non-GM sugarcane. That’s on top of our organic Soil Association and COSMOS certifications, which mean we follow the strictest standards on using natural resources responsibly.

So the good news is that shopping for Pai products is a sustainable choice - from the very ingredients we use to our compostable corn starch packing chips, we’re on the case. But how else can you embrace eco living? Here are seven swaps to help you save the environment and reduce your carbon footprint one small step at a time.

Swap impulse buys for products you love

Be a beauty aficionado, not a beauty junkie. While it’s tempting to shop the latest launch that’s sprung up on your latest Instagram scroll, your skin (and your wallet) will be so much happier if you shop for products that you love to the very last drop. That way, nothing’s wasted - and remember, we have a free 90-day returns policy if a product isn’t quite the right fit.

Swap household plastics for recyclable alternatives

Did you know that household sponges are often made of plastic? And not the recyclable kind, either. In the UK we throw away roughly 400 million plastic sponges every year, so it’s time to clean up your cleaning habits. Try a biodegradable alternative such as Wilton London’s compostable sponges - just as effective, but much more ethical.

Swap throwaway cups for reusables

It’s estimated that 16 billion single-use coffee cups are used each year around the world, while 7.7 billion plastic water bottles are used each year in the UK alone (that’s around 175 per person). Save money - and the planet - by drinking responsibly. Swap takeout cups, plastic bottles and straws for reusable alternatives.

Swap disposable plastics for smarter storage

Few rooms see more plastic pollution than our kitchens - but there is a greener way. Take cling film off your shopping list and swap it for reusable storage containers, glass jars or washable bags which will keep your food fresh.

Swap single-use sanitary products for greener options

It can take 500 years for sanitary products to decompose - and that’s before you factor in the packaging. Modern alternatives such as DAME’s organic tampons, reusable tampon applicators and sanitary pads are making plastic-free periods possible (and more accessible, too).

Swap bathroom basics for eco innovations

The kitchen isn’t the only room in the house in need of an eco makeover. Your bathroom cabinet can be easily improved too. From reusable or biodegradable cotton buds - made with natural bamboo or even recycled paper - to Wild’s compostable deodorant refills, environmentally friendly options are more than just a trend, they’re here to stay.

Swap cotton pads for organic cloths

You might have your sustainable skincare routine nailed, but don’t forget to look at those little extras that you use alongside it. Even though cotton balls and pads are made with natural fibres, they’re not compostable and create waste once they’ve been used. Try swapping them for reusable cloths instead, such as our muslin face cloths, made with 100% organic cotton. Our Twin Flyer dual-effect cloth even offers a soft-terry flannel side and a more exfoliating muslin side, so you get the best of both worlds and can use it again and again.
